Bungie and Activision sign a 10-year Distrubution Deal
Posted by: rasp1 on: 07/02/2010 09:23 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]
The deal with Activision and Bungie was unexpected. This 10 year deal won't deal with the Halo franchise, which Bungie's last hoorah for it will be Halo:Reach to be released this september, then the torch handed over to 343 Industries to continue development. Also from the way the press release was worded being a 360 only shop is over. This would make sense for them to move to a publisher like Activision who is a multiplatform publisher.
This process started in 2007 with the release of Halo 3 when they announced that they were an independent company again out from under Microsoft ownership. The split seemed amicable at the time as they announced Halo:ODST and Halo:Reach that would be published under the Microsoft banner. At the time Bungie announced another title in development, but would not release any details about the game. They are about a year and a half into it's next big thing at this time.
Being that they are a 'proven' studio, Bungie got a favorable deal with Activision in that they will be keeping control of their intellectual property from here on out, and Activision will only be Publishing and Distributing the games. From Bungie, "Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed."
I've posted the Activision release press release below.

Sony PS3 Motion Controller
Posted by: rasp1 on: 04/24/2010 10:16 AM [ Print | 0 comment(s) ]
Sony has announced their motion controller, Playstation Move. They look like the wands the traffic cops use to direct traffic. And the ends light up in a pretty pink and blue. Gay people every where are rejoicing. All of this was laid out at the 2010 Games Developer Conference.
SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said this about the Move, "A more precise, immersive, and responsive game experience" It seems like Sony has realized that Nintendo is a competitor and finally trying to compete against them, though it has only taken 4 years for them to come around.
The move will ship in three varieties:
- Wands only
- Wands with the Playstation Eye
- Bundled with new Playstation
The Eye, Move, and game bundle will retail less than $100
Sony demonstrated several games based on the new technology. First up is a medieval sword and shield, smash and bash game. You can slash with your sword and shield with either your left or right hand. If you put your hands behind your head you will taunt your opponent, and the Eye seemed to track it seemlessly and precisely.
Table tennis was the next demo. The Eye tracked subtle shifts in the wrist producing the same effects as a physical paddle, like top-spin and back-spin, and you can slam the table tennis ball just as you can in real life.
Sony next demo'ed a family friendly game called 'Move Party' with a bunch of motion-related challenges. In one you have a tennis racket and you 'swat' at things flying around you. You can morph it into a paint brush and have to color within in the lines before the timer runs out. They even made it morph into a portable hand-fan to help guide falling baby chicks into their nests.
LittleBigPlanet was shown being played in a 'Super Mario Galaxy' style where the second player used the wand to help manipulate the environment and help the first player through the map. They are also are releasing a 'nunchuck' as a 'sub-controller'. SOCOM 4 is also being developed to be able to play through the whole game using nothing but the wand technology.
This is Sony's 'big thing' for the year, so they will be pushing hard with a media blitz this fall.

Halo:Reach Game Editions

"Halo: Reach Delivers the Ultimate Collector’s Experience with Limited and Legendary Game Editions"
Bungie has been working with McFarlane Toys to make some very distinct versions of Halo:Reach, so that no matter what edition you claim, you will have a little surprise inside.
Starting today, you can preorder the Limited and Legendary Editions. Both editions have custom content on Halo:Reach and the Halo Universe.
The Standard edition will go for $59.99, the Limited for $79.99, and the Legendary Edition for $149.99
I'm wondering what the Armor Ability they are including with the Legendary Edition they are going to include. That might make the Legendary worth the almost 3 times the price of just the game alone. For a better break down, and Pictures:
